At the end of the month of March we would like to introduce our daffodils, of which we plant a lot of onions every autumn in order to have a colorful garden in early spring.
New breeds appear every year, and we now have a lot of different ones. A main goal of breeders is to obtain a different colored secondary crown, but there are also some double varieties.
The daffodils, which we call “Märzenbecher”, are a species of the genus Narcissus and are biologically called “Narcissus pseudonarcissus”.
The daffodils come from southwest Europe and northwest Africa and spread throughout Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries. The species Pseudonarcissus has spread across the Iberian Peninsula to Belgium and also to Great Britain, where it is particularly popular. Competitions are held there every year and prizes are awarded to special breeds.
The world’s largest onion producer, Holland, sells around 300 million daffodil onions every year.
