The Palm House was opened in 1882 after two years of construction.
It is 111 m long and with a floor area of 2500 m2 the second largest palm house in the world.
The glass surface is 4900 m2.
It was heavily damaged in 1945 by 3 bombs (almost all glass and many plants were destroyed), it was rebuilt in 1948-53 and in 1976-90 totally restored due to safety issues.
