Ponta Delgada / Sao Miguel

The 5.8 ha park was founded in 1845 by Jose da Canto (1820-98). He was a biologist, gardener and agrarian reformer. The German biologist Edmund Goetze describes the garden in 1866 as “undoubtedly the most beautiful and richest (3 000 species)“, he had visited in Europe.

Opposite the entrance is the side entrance to the chapel, whose facade faces the street. The park is designed as an arboretum with giant trees from all over the world. Wide paths lead uphill through the jungle. Above is the former manor house (now hotel), next to it is a large rosarium.
