In mid-June we visited Buchlovice Castle in Moravia.
This was at the beginning of the 18th century, commissioned by Dietrich von Peterswald, lord of nearby Buchlov Castle, for his wife, and initially served only as a summer residence. A French garden was laid out around the castle, very structured with many bush hedges, criss-crossed by paths and decorated with niches and statues.
Over the next 100 years, the surrounding forest was integrated into this complex and everything was transformed into an English garden. The lords of the castle, who traveled the world around as diplomats, brought back many exotic plants and trees from their travels, which they distributed throughout the grounds.
Stairs, terraces and balustrades lead from the back of the castle into the park and several streams flow through it.
In the adjoining nursery, around 1,000 species of fuchsias can be admired and bought during the summer months…we did both!
