The garden was already covered with snow at the end of January, which surprisingly stayed for a few days. The thaw was inevitable and we had a few days with high temperatures, which were replaced by frost down to -10°C. Full of concern for the many plant buds, which were already quite tall, we observed that they all survived this roller coaster ride and continued to develop as the temperatures got warmer.
Most snowdrops have faded by now, as have winter jasmine, snow roses and snowball snowballs. But the crocuses are just beginning, and the winter blooms have finally bloomed after 3 years. The grape hyacinths grow in dense clumps like grass, lie there as if frozen to death when it freezes – then straighten up again and continue to grow. Our green Rosa Viribunda defies all weather and blooms!
We are particularly pleased that the palm trees from Istria can cope with the cold winter here. Even our released Jucca shows no damage yet.
